Who can get a copy of a vital record?

 

Anyone can get a copy of a vital record (Birth, Death, or Marriage) recorded in our office. However, North Carolina law limits access to certified copies of vital records to the following people:

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse
  • Brother
  • Sister
  • Child or Step-child
  • Grandchild
  • Your parent
  • Grandparent
  • A person seeking legal determination of personal or real property rights 
  • Authorized agent, attorney or legal representative of the person whose certificate is being requested.

 

REQUEST MADE IN PERSON

You may visit the Register of Deeds office in person to obtain a certified copy. The fee is $10.00 per copy. This copy may be used for any legal purpose. You can also get an uncertified copy for $.25 per copy

REQUEST MADE VIA MAIL

If you cannot visit our office you may obtain a certified copy by mail. Please send a note with all the information such as name at birth, death or marriage, date of birth, death or marriage and parents' name with the mother's maiden name. The request must be signed by the individual making the request. Please include your phone number and a self-addressed envelope with a check or money order for $10.00 for each certified copy. In addition, the requestor must submit a copy of a government issued ID.

 

BIRTH RECORDS OF ADOPTED PERSONS

Birth certificates of individuals who were adopted are not available at our office and are only on file at the NC State Office of Vital Records. Please call 919-733-3000 or visit their website vitalrecords.nc.gov for assistance with adoption records.
